Flute Studio Alumni

Nobuko Araki, BM in performance (UCF) 2003. Nobuko was a very active student. She performed in masterclasses with Paul Edmund Davis, Bonita Boyd, Mary Karen Clardy, Bernard Goldberg, Donald Peck, Michel Debost, James Galway and Hubert Laws. She is a very active flute teacher in Tokyo, Japan and chamber music player.

Elam Ashman, won first prize in the Florida Flute Fair High School Young Artist 1999 and BSO Young Artist Competition 1998. Elam was the winner of the Concerto Competition 2003 playing the Griffes Poem. He also was alternate at the College Young Artist Competition 2003 at the Florida Flute Fair. Elam performed the Stamitz Concerto in G with the UCF orchestra in 2003. Elam won a scholarship to go to MIT to work with composition students. He was a composition student of Dr. Stella Sung. He performed masterclasses with Bonita Boyd, Mary Karen Clardy, Bernard Goldberg, Donald Peck, Michel Debost, James Galway and Hubert Laws.

Reyes Berrios, BM in performance (UCF) 2000 and Master Degree in Flute (UNT) 2003. Reyes is currently pursuing a Doctorate Degree in Musicology with Performance as Related Field at the University of North Texas, Denton, TX. He was the chair of the "Politics of Aesthetics" for the 2004 Renaissance Conference sponsored by the South-Central Renaissance Conference in Austin, Texas. This was recommended by Dr. Lester Brothers, chair of the Musicology and Theory Division at UNT. Reyes Berrios also performed at the National Flute Association Dallas Convention in a master class for Michel Debost and other master classes with Bonita Boyd (Flute Professor at Eastman School of Music) Mary Karen Clardy (Flute Professor at North Texas), Bernard Goldberg (Former principal flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Brooklyn College Flute Professor). He has performed at the Florida Flute Fair with the UCF Flute Quartet and played in various places included Puerto Rico, and France. He also studied abroad with the UCF Music Program at Moulin D'Ande.

Cynthia Cartagena, BM in performance from the Conservatory of Music 2000 and Masters Degree in Music Education from UCF 2002. Cynthia performed with the UCF Wind Ensemble in the tour to Europe and performed the Cimarosa Concerto for two flutes as a soloist with the UCF Orchestra. She also performed twice at the Florida Flute Fair. Cynthia was appointed full-time tenure track flute professor at the University of Puerto Rico and she is also the director of the music institute (Kids & Musik) where Kindermusik and the Suzuki method are part of the curriculum offered. She played masterclasses with Paul Edmund Davis, Bonita Boyd, Mary Karen, Bernard Goldberg, Donald Peck, and Michel Debost, Martha Rearick, and Kim McCormick.

Kelly Crotts, BM in performance (UCF) 1999 and Master of Music in Education from Southern Methodist University in Texas 2001. Kelly was a teaching assistant at Southern Methodist University and recently an adjunct professor in flute at Jacksonville State University, Alabama. Kelly performed at the Florida Flute Fair twice and participated at the Tri State Festival in Tallahassee Florida. She also went abroadwith the UCF Music Program at Moulin d'Ande, France. She played master classes with Paul Edmund Davis, (Principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra) Mary Karen Clardy, and Bernard Goldberg.

Linda Hypes graduated with a Masters Degree in Music Education in December 2004. Linda performed four times at the National Flute Association. She performed with the Professional Flute Choir, and she played a master class with Michel Debost in Dallas. She also performed a Masters Degree Recital and played master classes with Paul Edmund Davis, Mary Karen Clardy, James Galway, Martha Rearick, and Kim McCormick.

Rebecca auf dem Kampe, BM in performance (UCF) 2003 graduated from the Honor's College with Honors. Rebecca won the Quello Award in 2002. She had the highest scholarship offered to any music student, The Richard Weatherill Scholarschip that covers full tuition, board and books. Rebecca was UCF Concerto Competition winner 2002 playing the Ibert Flute Concerto. She performed the Cimarosa Concerto for two flutes as a soloist with the UCF Orchestra. She performed master classes with Paul Edmund Davis, Bonita Boyd, Mary Karen Clardy, Bernard Goldberg, Donald Peck, and Michel Debost.

Melissa King, BME in music education (UCF)2005. Melissa recently became the Band Director of Howard Middle School in Orlando. She performed various master classes for Bernard Goldberg, Michel Debost, James Galway.

Holly Kowalski: A very active music education student, Holly worked with the Downtown String program and recently she became part of the Orientation Team at UCF. This very selective team is comprised of students with high leadership and academic skills. She is the first music student to make this team. She performed master classes for Mary Karen Clardy, Bernard Goldberg, Michel Debost, James Galway, Hubert Laws, Martha Rearick and Kim McCormick.

Marysol Quevedo, BM in performance (UCF) 2005 and UCF Dean's list and president Hitt's honor roll. Marysol won the Gale Sperry Memorial Scholarship in 2003 and the Presser Award in 2004, the highest award given by the Music Department for the highest GPA and excellence in music. Marysol is a Ph.d student at Indiana University studying Musicology and recipient of a Music Scholarship that was given to only 2 students. She gave her senior recital in spring 2005 and junior recital in spring 2004. She performed master classes with Mary Karen Clardy, Bernard Goldberg, James Galway, and Hubert Laws.

Julie Troum graduated with a Masters in Education at UCF in 2005. She was an Adjunct Instructor in 2004 at the University of Central Florida, teaching "Music in the Elementary School." She won the McGeoch Graduate Award in 2004. She is a Ph.d student at the University of South Florida. She performed various master classes with Donald Peck, Mary Karen Clardy, and Kathy Chastain.

Highlights

Anthony Rivera graduated from The Peabody Conservatory of Music with an M.M. in Wind Conducting in May 2006. For two years, he was Director of Bands at New Town High School in Baltimore, Maryland, and now teaches at Eastern Technical School in Baltimore. [Read More]
