An article by Eric Charry, an American ethnomusicologist
who specializes in the music of West Aftrica, about a drum

African Drumming
Dancedrummer.com is an outstanding web resource
maintained by Kevin O'Sullivan, who studied African
drumming in Ghana as Fulbright scholar in 1994-95.
Among this site's resources are a "virtual drum museum"
that allows you to "play" and hear the various drums in an
Ewe drum ensemble, a site on "traditional rhythms" that
demonstrates how each drum functions in an ensemble
piece, and several other links to pages on the history and
culture of the region. (Warfield)

Indonesian
Gamelan
This is a website that talks about the different instruments
in a Javanese Gamelan orchestra. It describes seventeen
different instruments in total and has some very detailed
pictures on the web site as well. There is also a brief history
of the Gamelan and a brief description on what to expect at
a Gamelan concert. This would be an excellent resource for
a middle school music teacher wanting to introduce
Indonesian music to his/her class. (Lawrence Shane)

Gamelan Sekar Jaya (Balinese Gamelan in
America)
This web site, devoted to the Gamelan, is maintained by a
non-profit volunteer organization (GSJ) dedicated to the
study and presentaion of Balinese performing arts. Places
to look on this site are the library, which has useful articles
on gamelan, and the most impressive was the Interactice
Media section (Shockwave required) where you can "play" a
Calung and a Balinese Gamelan. (Beth Bichler)

Gamelan Music
This site focuses on Gamelan music. It has history, music
samples, geography, and gamelan instruments. It would be
good from middle school through high school students. It is
very organized, with colorful pictures and graphics, and has
a lot of information. (Becky White)

Tabla.com
Information on Tabla drums, including performers
http://www.tabla.com/tablahpg.html
THE TABLA SITE
This website contains almost everything you would ever
want to know about the Tabla. It has a great chart on how
and where to hit the drum to produce the mnemonic
syllables. It includes some wonderful pictures, and their
articles provide very useful information on the different
musical forms. There is also an illustrated article on the
cyclic form that really helps one understand their uses of
rhythm and meter, and there is an amazing glossary that
contains hundreds of Indian musical terms clearly defined.
This is a great overview on North Indian music. (Anja K.

Folk Music of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and
America
This website contains traditional folk songs of each country.
The website lists numerous songs in chronological order
dating back from the 17th century to a few songs composed
during the 1900's. Each song listed has information about
the piece including its concept and origin. Also listed are
the
lyrics and related links on additional information about the
song. Each country has links that briefly discuss its history
and biographies of its native composers. This site is a
wonderful resource for teachers. (Suzanne McPherson)

Celtic Music
Ceolas is one the largest web sites for celtic music
established since 1994. It provides the history of celtic
music, instruments used, profiles of artist, reviews, sound
samples, and plenty other forms of resources in dance and
culture. This would be a great source of information for
teachers and students from middle school to the college
level. (Edrick Rhodes)

World Music Central
As described by the title this site is a World Music nexus
that can be best described as an up-to-date "World Music
Magazine." Providing everything from CD and book reviews
to concert schedules around the globe World Music Central
is an eclectic array of world music information. Some of the
particular resources of interest displayed on the site are: a
glossary of world music instruments with definitions, a
forum for relaying your questions to the world, and
interviews with leading world music artists. Though this site
may not help much in specialized directed research of a
particular culture, it will provide you with an up-close look at
what is happening in world music today. (Alex
Panagiotacos)

The Educational Cyberplayground Ethnic Music Page
The content on this awsome website is too rich to list, but let
it suffice to say that it would be a priceless tool to the music
teacher. It provides numerous ways and forms to integrate
folklore and ethnomusicology into the K-12 classrooms, as
well as providing links to many external sites. While too
complex and wordy for most students, it would be a
must-visit for any music teacher. (Aristides Salgueiro)
